CTA 2023 New Educator Weekend - North

CTA’s New Educator Weekend (NEW) is a conference for new CTA members. This NEW conference is for educators in their first three years in the profession. The conference has everything that educators need to be successful in their first years of teaching, including sessions about classroom management, creating engaging classrooms, lesson plans and ideas, connecting with your union, student loan forgiveness information, member benefits, project grants and more. Your experience at the New Educator Weekend is equal parts educational and transformational. You’ll learn new skills and find solutions to real-life challenges. You’ll leave the conference feeling inspired, motivated and with a knowledge of what you need to do to be even more successful on Monday morning in your classroom. Download this letter, Reasons to Attend NEW and share it with your Principal to prove the value of attending the New Educator Weekend. Want to send a group of teachers to NEW? Toby Boyd 12:00 PM Conference Concludes Member Benefits Pre-Conference Fill Your Toolbox with CTA/NEA Member Benefits & Resources! Friday, March 10, 2023 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Join us early and attend this special Friday pre-conference at New Educator Weekend (North). Every CTA member has a vital role in our association that is actively committed to upholding the highest standards for both students and the education profession. With CTA’s mission to protect and promote the well-being of its members, your membership provides you with important access to numerous high-quality, union-endorsed Member Benefits. At this full-day, Friday pre-conference, you’ll learn much more about your CTA/NEA-endorsed, members-only benefit programs, designed for educators and with your interests in mind. Join us to take advantage of the Member Benefits available to you! During your day, you’ll cover:

  • Your Guide to CTA/NEA Member Benefits – Did you know you have access to exclusive, members-only programs and deals for lots of things from your daily dining and shopping to your car insurance? This session is a lively, comprehensive overview of your CTA/NEA Member Benefits, including voluntary insurances, student debt relief assistance, shopping, dining and travel discounts, automatic Educators Employment Liability (EEL), Disaster Relief Fund, and more.

  • Putting on Your Oxygen Mask First – Airlines tell you to put on your oxygen mask first before you help others with theirs. Educators need to know how to take care of themselves in order to support their students. During the pandemic, educators experienced unprecedented levels of stress, burnout, and trauma. They are barely surviving inconceivable working conditions and constantly changing demands. In this session, we will explore habits, practices, and resources from CTA and NEA that can be used to manage stress.

  • Stronger Together: Building Wealth for a Successful Retirement – CTA wants you to have a long and happy retirement. CalSTRS/CalPERS generally covers only about half of your income at retirement, so it’s essential to consider a supplementary retirement savings plan as early as possible to make up the difference. There are a lot of plans offered to educators, but many have high fees or surrender charges. In this session, we discuss the basics of saving for retirement using easy-to-understand terms, review how to avoid suboptimal plans, and help you get started toward a financially secure retirement.

We are providing release time for this pre-conference, which means CTA Member Benefits will reimburse your employer for your substitute on Friday, March 10, 2023 to assist with your availability to attend. During the registration process, please review the requirements to receive release time for this day and, if you are able to satisfy all requirements, be sure to request release time and provide the necessary information. The Friday Pre-Conference is FREE to attend, and space is limited so don’t wait. Register today! Continental breakfast and registration will begin at 8:30 am and lunch will also be served.
